Religious Activities

A.  LITURGY - The worship of God is the center of any Christian Community's life. At Farrell, the Eucharist is celebrated daily in the school Chapel and on special occasions in the auditorium.

B. SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION -This sacrament, regularly available, is an occasion of growth in faith as we turn toward Christ and come into greater contact with ourselves, other people and God. Confessions are heard every Thursday afternoon at 2:30 in the Chapel. During the Advent and Lenten seasons, every religion class is afforded the opportunity to participate in a Penance Service. Priests are also available on request.

C. VOCATION PROGRAM - Christ calls each person to a special role in the Church. In order to foster priestly and religious vocations, both the priest (see below) and brother ( see www.cfcvocations.org) faculty members engage in vocation awareness activities throughout the year.

D. RETREAT TEAM - A select team of Farrell Seniors ministers to the needs of elementary school students by helping to run special retreat days at the Mount Manresa Retreat House located on Staten Island.

E. TEACHING CHRISTIAN MESSAGE (TCM) - A unique program which helps prepare specially selected Juniors for the ministry of religious education. During their Senior year these students will be assigned to teach public elementary school students who attend religious education classes throughout the Staten Island area.

F. LIFE TEAM - A special group of students who offer their time and service to the community as a way of expressing their support and concern for the sanctity of life. Life Team members participate in the Cardinal's Mass for the disabled; attend Pro-Life Leadership Day at St. Joseph's Seminary; run the school's food pantry for the benefit of the less fortunate of the community, collect gifts for the Elizabeth Ann Seton Nursing Home and distribute toys to the American Cancer Society and Seton foundation at Christmas time.

G. STUDENT RETREAT PROGRAM - Offered at the Franciscan Friary located on Todt Hill Road, this special program is required of all Farrell Seniors. During the course of the school year, each religion class will be scheduled for a day of retreat which is conducted by a carefully selected team provided by the Friary. In addition to the Friary team, Farrell priests will take turns serving as additional confessors at the penance services which are always a part of each retreat experience. Underclassmen are offered a day of retreat at school.  Classes are suspended for the day and a Retreat Team, provided by the Society of Don Bosco, conduct the Program in conjunction with the priests of Farrell and the Religion  Department.

H. CATHEDRAL PREP PROGRAM - A new and exciting program available to those young men who have expressed a more serious interest in exploring the possibility of a priestly vocation. Throughout the year, students will be regular participants at the daily 7:55 a.m. school mass with opportunities for them to participate as readers and altar servers. Ongoing conferences with the Farrell priests will help the students to investigate and discuss a wide variety of subjects relating to priestly ministry and the celibate life style, etc.

There will be numerous opportunities for students to listen to guest speakers such as priests serving in parishes, hospitals, prisons, the military, rehabilitation programs and other special ministries. In addition, students will spend time focusing on such important topics as the history of the priesthood, personal prayer, the celibate life style and the sacramental ministry of the priest, especially the Eucharist, which is at the very heart of the priesthood.

Special off-campus experiences will include trips to the St. John Neumann Residence, St. Joseph´s Seminary, St. Patrick´s Cathedral and other places of interest. Monthly overnights at St. Joseph´s Seminary are expected to provide a unique opportunity for students to get together and dialogue with other boys who belong to vocation programs around the Archdiocese.
