College Application Process

CLASS OF 2008

PLEASE FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY REGARDING ALL COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

1.  Write or call colleges to get an application.  We have a limited supply of SOME applications in the college office.  It is the student's responsibility to know the college application due dates.

2.  Fill out your part completely.  Remember to fill out the biographical data at the top of the counselor's and teacher's recommendation sections.  Sign the application.  Incomplete applications will be returned to the student.  There is a five-dollar charge for each application, which covers Msgr. Farrell's costs for processing the application.  In addition, do not forget to attach a check made out to the college for the specified application fee.

3.  Fill out a yellow registration card for each and every application.  Pick up these yellow cards from the college office before you fill out the application.  You will need the information printed on this card.

4.  Before handing in an application, you must check to see if you have two teacher recommendation letters on file in my office.  Applications without at least two letters of recommendation will be returned to the student.

5.  Applications, essays and resumes should be typed neatly and handed in with the application packet. Remember that the application represents you and provides the primary opportunity for students to distinguish yourself.  Better than average essays personalize applications and set you apart.  Try to connect one of your major activities to the theme of the essay.  Colleges want to know about the quality of your service activities, not the quantity.

6.  Teachers should use the school's letter of recommendation form instead of the form given to you by the college in the application packet.  We will make copies of the recommendation letter written by the teacher.  We will use this letter for all of the colleges to which you apply.  If you apply to ten different colleges, you cannot ask a teacher to write ten different letters of recommendation.  Recommendation forms are in the College Office.  There are some exceptions that will be discussed in guidance class.

7.  We send a return receipt card with every application.  When we receive the return receipt card, it is filed in alphabetical order in the college office.  Students should check to see if we received the card about three weeks after the application is mailed.

8.  Regardless of the instructions on the application, the College Office will send out the entire application packet with the letters of recommendation from the teachers and the counselor. DO NOT SEND OUT APPLICATIONS ON YOUR OWN .  Only applications seen by Mr. DiPietro will have the official school records attached to them.   A transcript is also sent together with information about the school.  Some colleges require you to pay the application fee before you get the actual application (especially the more competitive schools).  You can do this on your own.

Special Note:  Students who file over the Internet must print a copy of the application for submission to Mr. DiPietro and must comply with all procedures and due dates specified in this bulletin.  School records and recommendation letters will be attached to this copy and mailed by the College Office.

9.Deadlines must be met. We cannot comply with a college deadline if we do not get a completed application that meets with our deadline.  The dates below must be observed.

10.  Keep a copy of all application materials. WE DO NOT MAKE OR KEEP COPIES. Hand in your applications to Mr. DiPietro or Mrs. Taranto.

11.It would be an impossible task to announce individual college application deadlines. Our boys apply to hundreds of different schools. It is the responsibility of the student and his parents to know when applications are due to the admissions office at the college and when applications are due to the College Office at Msgr. Farrell. This responsibility is extended to knowing all college entrance requirements including grades and standardized testing (SAT I, II, ACT etc.). Students can locate this information by using the many resources in our school's College Office or by contacting the college directly.
