From our first day at Msgr. Farrell High School we learned that we are “Farrell Men 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year”. Farrell is an integral part of who we are. This is why it is a real privilege for me to be the principal of the school that has played a key role in my life. As a student (Class of 1976), teacher (1987-1990) and now as principal, I can say that it is a real blessing to be one of the Men of Farrell.
With our 50th anniversary on the horizon this year, we begin a new phase of the growth of Msgr. Farrell High School. Over two generations of alumni have proven that a Farrell education molds the entire man, and makes him a success at whatever he does. The word “education” means to be led out of oneself. This is what a Farrell education does for a young man. Here he is given the intellectual challenge, the athletic opportunity, the social skills and, most importantly, the gift of faith so that he can actualize his God-given potential in whatever walk of life he chooses.
Our alumni occupy key positions in business, education, medicine, public service, science and technology. Thanks be to God, many of our alumni serve others in the priesthood and religious life. Our graduates become good husbands and fathers. In short, each student remains the Vir Fidelis – the faithful man.
Since being named principal, I have heard from alumni across the years and across the world. Each alumnus has reiterated that his Farrell experience has left an indelible mark on the man he is today. The knowledge, friendships and faith found here carries these men throughout their lives.
Our students today are the same intelligent, articulate, and talented young men as those who came before them. As an alumnus, I am proud of our students and I thank their families for the opportunity to be part of making them Farrell Men.
Rev. Msgr. Edmund J. Whalen, S.T.D.
