E-Sports team levels up against the competition
Members of the Monsignor Farrell E-Sports team compete in games such as Rocket League, Fortnite, Valorant, NBA 2K, and more.
To E-Sports athletes, it's more than a game
Older generations may say that they were told video games were a waste of time. In modern times, however, the video game industry has exploded into a world where video game competitions are viewed as sport.
Monsignor Farrell’s E-Sports program has a variety of games that people can compete in, including Fortnite, Rocket League, Marvel Rivals, and more! Members of the team, moderated by Mr. Weir, '98, compete in tournaments and win through strategic planning and teamwork.
David Rivera, '27, is a Marvel Rivals and Fortnite player who managed to reach the platinum division alongside his partner. Though he's just in his first season as an E-Sports athlete, Rivera is an experienced gamer who is focused on continuing to improve his play.
The third-floor computer lab serves as a place where e-sports team members can practice and compete.
"I believe I can improve by practicing consistently, and I generally play more in my free time," Rivera said.
Shea Lincer, '28, is also a Marvel Rivals participant. When Lincer plays, he tries to think about the situation he is in on the game and what his next move can be to acquire the win for his team.
It's not just about practice for Lincer, however. He also looks to see how professional e-sports athletes strategize and play.
"I gets better by practicing and by watching the pros," Lincer said. "[These give] me ideas for my next opponents."
Mr. Weir serves as moderator for the Monsignor Farrell E-Sports team.
With the new addition of the game Marvel Rivals, it adds more opportunities for people to join since the game is popular.
Whether a solo competitor or working in a team, the E-Sports athletes toil and strategize like other athletes as they look to secure their own honors and championships.
The best of luck to the E-Sports team as they continue their 2024-25 campaign.
