Freshmen collaborate on podcast that has taken Farrell Media Network spotlight

In today’s world, media can be defined by the world of podcasting. Podcasts have taken over entertainment covering a wide variety of topics like sports, movies, and news. Monsignor Farrell has their own group of podcasters with the 5-Out podcast.

The 5-Out Podcast is a casual weekly discussion amongst five students who each share a love for sports. The podcast is run by a group of Farrell students with hosts Giuseppe Balzano, '28, Nicholas Fieramosca, '28, and Cameron Encarnacion, '28, along with producer Patrick Licata, '28 and cameraman Luke Yannaco, '28.

This group of freshmen discuss the latest news, and their "hot takes" on sports like the NBA and the NFL.

The 5-Out podcast was originally planned to be exclusively a basketball show before the inclusion of discussions on the NFL and college football.

"Just five good friends, and we all share one thing in common we all love sports," Balzano said.

The podcast was originally founded as a basketball podcast, stemming the name 5-Out After postponing the podcast's first episode for weeks, their first episode discussed Week 9 of the NFL, along with collage football rankings and NBA weekly standouts.

Each week segments are shared amongst the men in preparation for filming their episodes in the communications center. They prepare general notes they want to discuss in their episodes, keeping it causal and open for on-the-spot discussion.

"We don't want to try to sound too robotic," Balzano stated. "We want to make it seem like we're in our basement just talking about the NFL or the NBA."

The podcast is filmed using two cameras, with one camera on the main desk and another camera focusing on whoever is talking at the moment. The cameras are operated using a switch to provide different angles and high quality to their episodes.

Once the episodes are recorded, Licata, the show's editor and producer, emails the finished product to Mr. Kennedy, '12 -- Director of Alumni Affairs and moderator of the Mosignor Farrell Media Network -- who uploads the video to the network's YouTube channel. Along with full episodes on YouTube, they have an Instagram account where the channels' best moments are posted.

The 5-Out podcast has gotten recognition with the freshman class through the podcast's Instagram, with students quoting the podcasts most memorable moments to the cast throughout the day.

The 5-Out podcast, and all other shows as part of the Monsignor Farrell Podcasting Network, are recorded in the Communications Center.

This relatively young podcast has big plans and hopes to continue producing new episodes throughout their time at Monsignor Farrell.
