Archaeology Society - WWII Archaeology

Room 112

Thursday, April 23 2026 from 08:30 PM to 09:30 PM

The Archaeology Society will be discussing World War II archaeology, including some of the recent discoveries at the “Wolf’s Lair” - Hitler’s hidden Nazi headquarters in Poland.

New members are always welcome.

Archaeological work at Wolf’s Lair (Wolfsschanze) in present-day Poland has uncovered disturbing remains beneath parts of the complex.  The Latebra Foundation, a group of amateur archaeologists that has been combing through the Wolf’s Lair with official permission for several years, made the grim discovery beneath what would once have been the villa’s floor.

Context of the Site

Wolf’s Lair was Adolf Hitler’s first Eastern Front headquarters (1941–1944), housing the Nazi high command, living quarters for top officials, and command bunkers.  It was abandoned after the 20 July 1944 assassination attempt (Operation Valkyrie) on Hitler and later partially destroyed by retreating German forces. The site remained largely off-limits to the public until after the fall of communism in Poland.
