Every greater runner has their path — for Junior Edwin “JJ” Alleva, '27, that path has gained him remarkable success as a part of Monsignor Farrell’s Track and Field program.
Since his first race, Alleva has been on a lane of his own, knocking on the door of greatness. In his first season, two years ago, Alleva became only the seventh Farrell freshman to win a New York Catholic State Championship. And since then, the accolades have kept coming.
Recently, Alleva soared into first place at the Island Championship finishing with an impressive time of 15:29.7.
Edwin "JJ" Alleva speaks with Ocean Breeze NYC following his cross country individual championship victory.
"That was a nice race, because the kid that came in second place, we really pushed ourselves in the woods area, when nobody was watching," Alleva said. "It was a really challenging race."
Additionally, Alleva, along with teammate Matthew Venditti, '27, qualified for the New York State Federation Championship on November 22nd, with Alleva posting a mark of 12:52.8 at Van Cortland.
Champions are the result of their hard work, and Alleva’s discipline helps him ascend on track. The team's weak routine consists of long runs and workouts. They start off the week with Monday workouts while Tuesdays are composed of easier runs. Wednesdays and Thursdays alternate between long runs and workouts.
Fridays are meant to get the team ready as they participate in short pre-races before their races on the weekend.
In addition to his championship this year, Alleva was also the individual winner in last year's CHSAA Sophomore Championship race.
Success is not just a product of physicality, but mentality as well. Alleva makes sure to keep his mind sharp when preparing for races, especially when facing obstacles.
"This season, I’ve come second place in most my races," said Alleva. "You have to have that mindset that you’re just going to do better, because otherwise you aren't going to get anywhere."
With great induvial accomplishments Alleva never forgets those who have helped him during his journey.
"[Coach John Bentivegna, '13], he trains us very hard, he keeps us going. The team keeps me going," Allebva said. "My mom motivates me; she's always cheering me on, and it’s a nice feeling to be recognized and cheered on."
Heading into the New York State Federation Championship, Alleva shows no signs of slowing down. Alleva highlights the importance of dedication and perseverance proving that every step counts in pursuit of the finish line.
