Exploring the Philosophy and Classics Colloquium
In the Classics and Philosophy Colloquium, Monsignor Farrell students get the opportunity to explore the thoughts and ideas from history's greatest thinkers, from Socrates (left) to Sir Thomas More.
The Rebirth Of Farrell's Student-Led Philosophy Club
For centuries, the world's greatest minds have discussed the fundamental questions of existence. In the pursuit of understanding values, reason, mind, and knowledge, these great minds gave way to what is today known as philosophy.
The legacy of these philosophers continues through the Lions of the Classics and Philosophy Colloquium. Headed by Mr. Franz, the Colloquium was reopened this year at the students' request. Mark Weiser, '26, led the charge.
“It used to be a bigger thing when I was a freshman, and I thought it was a cool club, but it died away as more kids who led it graduated," Weiser said. "It appealed to my interests at the time. I follow the tradition of those who came before me by keeping the club alive."
"Philosophy isn't about having all the answers; it's about learning how to ask better questions"
- Joshua Dawoud, '28
The Colloquium's meetings, which occur every Monday in Room 119, are student-driven discussions on various topics, ranging from political discourse to reflection on the works of great thinkers such as Thomas More. Mr. Franz serves to guide discussion by establishing context and ensuring students have a clear understanding of the facts.
Aside from this guiding hand, students are free to reflect, discuss, and debate with Mr. Franz or with each other.
"Philosophy isn't about having all the answers; it's about learning how to ask better questions," said Joshua Dawoud, '28, an active member of the Colloquium.
The goal of the Colloquium is to foster intellectual curiosity, giving students an opportunity to question, challenge, and refine their view of the world. Students are encouraged to ask questions that open doors to deeper understanding and further inquiry, granting them wisdom over certainty.
The Colloquium is open to all students: all you need to do is attend a meeting and join the Schoology group. The Colloquium's size, with only 20 members on Schoology and a close circle of regular participants, creates a tight-knit community where everyone knows and respects one another. This ensures that everyone's voice is heard, keeping the pursuit of wisdom a collective endeavor shared among Farrell brothers.
Even in a small room, a handful of thoughtful minds can form ideas that outlast generations. The Colloquium stands as a reminder that positive change begins with a few individuals willing to think deeply and critically. The current Lions of the Colloquium carry the torch ignited by the great minds of the past, and they will pass the torch to the next generation of Lions willing to ask deep questions about the world around them.
