Good Vibes And Friendly Competition Through Intramural Sports Offered To Monsignor Farrell Students

It's safe to say that most students at Monsignor Farrell are sports fans, though not everyone participates in every sports season. But what if you didn't have to be a student-athlete to take part in a sport at Farrell?

Among the various afterschool clubs and activities at Monsignor Farrell high school, we have  intramural sports, all of which are run by Mr. Tierney, '97.

There are four different intramural leagues, In the fall, there is the fall bocce league, assisted by Ms. Weiss, and 3-on-3 basketball leagues, assisted by Mr. Lieto. In the winter there is the flag football league, assisted by Mr. Scafuri, '98. To end it off there is the spring Bocce league, assisted by Mr. Frasca, '15.

Mr. Tierney said that teams are formed and created by the students themselves. Each team must have a designated captain, and they are responsible for managing their team members and making sure their teams understand the rules and schedule.

The rules for bocce are based on the rules from the USA Bocce Federation. The 3-on-3 basketball rules use the rules set from the intramural league of Seton Hall University, which Mr. Tierney was a part of.

Flag football's rules, meanwhile, follow the rules of the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA). Both bocce and flag football have modifications to fit for the leagues for Farrell.

Team Roaring Thunder, consisting of Joseph Iacono, '28 (left), and Michael Olsen, '28, won the bocce league this past spring, becoming the first team to win both the fall and spring leagues in a single school year. Standing alongside them is Mr. Tierney, 97 (far right),  who oversees all of the intramural sports leagues that take place throughout the Monsignor Farrell school year.

The winners of each league have their team’s name engraved on the champion’s cup trophy for that sport; these trophies are displayed in the back of room 115. For both basketball and football there is also an MVP trophy.

The winners for flag football and spring bocce receive sweatshirts. Fall bocce and basketball champions receive T-shirts.

While the fall bocce and basketball seasons are ongoing, be on the look out in the coming months for registration opportunities to participate in the winter flag football and spring bocce leagues.
