First Inductees into Honor Societies for Spanish and Italian
On Monday, January 12, students, parents, and faculty gathered in the gym to congratulate the Juniors and Seniors inducted into Monsignor Farrell’s first Foreign Language Honor Society.
This ceremony was to recognize the hard work and accomplishments of students inducted into this prestigious honor society. Inducted students have had a 90 average or higher in Spanish or Italian for two consecutive years while maintaining a GPA of 85 percent or higher.
The Sociedad Honoraría Hispánica (SHH), San José, Un Hombre Fiel was granted through the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. The Società Onoraria Italica (SOI), Santa Rosalia was granted through the American Association of Teachers of Italian.
Mr. DiPietro, Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages, awards a student their certificate, pin, and membership card.
The SHH was named after San José, the earthly father of Jesus and husband of Mary. San José is often recognized as the faithful man. The SOI was named after Santa Rosalia, the patron saint of Palermo, Sicily.
The SHH and SOI came to Monsignor Farrell thanks to the leadership and vision of Ms. Labrada and Ms. Stanley.
The ceremony began with Mr. DiPietro, Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages, leading the inductees in prayer with the Hail Mary in Spanish and Italian. In his speech, Mr. DiPietro discussed the importance of knowing another language, encouraging the inductees to continue practicing foreign languages after the end of their studies.
From left: Ms. Stanley, Ms. Robles, Mr. DeMartino, and Mr. Fisher, '05, beam with pride during the induction ceremony.
Afterwards, Ms. Labrada and the inductees of the Spanish honor society recited the SHH oath before receiving their certificate, pin, and membership card.
Ms. Stanley followed in a similar manner with the inductees of the Italian honor society, beiginning with a reciting of the SOI oath.
Congratulations to all students inducted into the Foreign Language Honor Society, and special thanks to the Foreign Language Department for their commitment to global learning and academic excellence.
