New Archery Program Looks To Meet the Mark
What originally started as a trial run and a test to see if the student's interest was there succeeded. the archery team has arrived.
The idea for this program came to Mr. Scafuri, '99, when he learned that his nephew was part of a similar club in his own school. Scafuri, a former Boy Scout and certified Basic Archery Instructor, realized that he can run a similar program himself.
Mr. Scafuri added that his motivation was boosted with the vision of competing against other Staten Island schools with this sport, including St. Peter's and St. Joseph by the Sea.
Robert Pizzino, '28, readies his bow and arrow as he demonstrates aiming as an archer.
Starting a club like this for the first time is no easy task. Convincing the administration to allow such a sport took significant work, but the main issue was having everything insured. There was also the logistical challenge of securing spots in competitive tournaments, which often fill up extremely quickly.
Despite these challenges, the team now has all of their logistics set up. Archery, a winter season sport, has its practices held in the school gymnasium and the Zimmer Club on Arthur Kill Road. To ensure that everyone can try, the school provides bows for all archers. Students, however, are welcome to purchase their own approved equipment if they choose.
While the club is accepting everyone from any label, the coaches hopes are rather high. Mr. Scafuri said that he aims to register for as many tournaments as possible to get their experience up quickly. His biggest hope for the club currently is a trip to nationals which would give the program an excellent foundation for future years.
The new archery program will be led by Mr. Scafuri, '99.
As the team moves through their season, they will continue to welcome anyone who wishes to try. The coaches specifically set the program up in a way that is fun yet focused, which can help anyone from beginners to experts improve their skills.
Whether you have never picked up a bow or are looking to take your skills to a national level, the team is looking for fresh faces to join them for the season.
