Religious retreats for Farrell students revived

Washington famously crossed the Delaware on December 25, 1776. In his journey, he also passed the grounds that now is St. Joseph's Seminary in Dunwoodie — a neighborhood in Yonkers, New York.

Luckily, Monsignor Farrell High School juniors also passed the same grounds — 248 years later.

On October 3rd, the class of 2026 had the chance to go to the seminary for a junior retreat. The experience ended up being exhilarating and interesting.

The retreat was split up into sections. It began with a reflection about God around us, which also doubled as a tour. Then, [Msgr Farrell Chaplain] Father [Jeff] Pomeisl took students to the soccer and baseball field on the campus, where the juniors did a traditional rosary walk.

After the rosary, students were invited into a discussion that ranged on topics from death to the sacred host.

After a long day of prayer and focus, lunch was provided. Plates were filled with chicken, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, sodas, cookies, and brownies. To wrap up the retreat, time was set apart for adoration.

The junior retreat took place on October 3 at St. Joseph's Seminary in Dunwoodie, a neighborhood in Yonkers, New York.

The huge land on which the Seminary is located allows candidates for the Catholic order to study in a lively environment. The junior class also saw the class picture of our founder, Monsignor Joseph A. Farrell, and the phrase Vir Fidelis on the chorus balcony.

Although the chance to cross the Delaware wasn’t available for the class of 2026, they had an excellent experience with a moment to grow stronger in faith and closer to God.

The freshmen, meanwhile, took part in their own retreat that was held on Farrell's campus on October 10. It marked the first time in approximately a decade that freshmen were given an opportunity to have this experience.

Just as the juniors did in Yonkers, Father Pomeisl led the freshmen through their own journey to get closer to God and help spread his message.

The experience saw freshmen take part in a few different stations held around the campus, including the gymnasium and the chapel, and the faith only seemed to grow with every step.

The chapel served as a location for one of the stations as part of the freshman retreat.

Sophomores will have their own opportunity for a retreat this coming spring.
