Tom Cosgrove's second year on Padres

Tom Cosgrove, '14, made history last year when he became the first alumnus in Monsignor Farrell history to reach the MLB level.

Tom Cosgrove '14 had an unforgettable rookie season for the 82-80 San Diego Padres in a tough NL West Division that included the NL champion Arizona Diamondbacks.

After Cosgrove’s four years at Farrell, he attended Manhattan College, where he was one of the best pitchers in the MAAC at the time. Cosgrove made 14 appearances with 13 of them being stars in his breakout junior year. He held opposing hitters to a .235 average as a dominating starter.

Cosgrove was drafted, on his 21st birthday, in the 12th round of the 2017 MLB Draft, selected 348th overall selection by the San Diego Padres.

Cosgrove started his MLB career last March as a reliever and only had a positive impact on his team. Cosgrove came in 54 times and pitched 51.1 innings, earning a remarkably low 1.75 ERA. His dominance and consistency were shown throughout the entire year as he led all major league pitchers in average exit velocity, with an extremely low speed of 83.9 MPH.

This displays Cosgrove's proficiency to keep hitters off-balance and how his expertise limits the power of the hitter's bat, as shown through league-leading statistics.

Cosgrove has high expectations in his second season in the majors as he looks to pitch even better than he did in his eye-catching rookie season. Everyone at Farrell wishes him and The San Diego Padres a successful upcoming season.
